The Hobby Almost Took Everything — Until It Didn’t

 Hi again, Jeremy

I've fallen about 3 months behind with my podcast consumption (as I was mainly consuming sports contents during the NBA playoffs), so I've just recently learned about your Joe Jackson purchase - congratulations!

My biggest recent purchase was the 1948 George Mikan PSA 1, which I am over the moon about.

I still listen to your podcast, so this is a reminder (and I am a good example of this) that there are many many people listening to your show who never really engage in the chat, but are still grateful for the great content you put out.

Take care

Priit

The Hobby Almost Took Everything — Until It Didn’t

Jeremy I just wanted tot take a moment and express my gratitude to you and your panelists on the recent episode on addiction.

In the small chance it helps to maintain empathy and understanding and to help another person I wanted to share that my primary reason for my recent sell off and essentially near exit of the hobby from a purchasing perspective was that I became fully addicted to the hobby.

For reasons unclear to me, perhaps incredible luck, I was able to, one day, wake up and realize I needed to exit. Thankfully I was very fortunate to be able to exit without irreparable damage to me and my family.

I found the addiction and insane rush of auctions in particular, but just acquiring increasingly rare and special high value cards, very consuming.

I was fully fully addicted to eBay/searching and sadly spending.

I am very fortunate that I have means, and more importantly that I woke up and was able to exit before I destroyed my financial situation and my family.

This was all internal, my family never had an issue with it. I thankfully never amassed debt or anything but the spending was out of control.

Net all told I spent over $1M. Thankfully I was able to exit and lost less than $50K which is a tiny tiny tiny price to pay.

I still enjoy some cards and the content and the stories but thankfully I no longer feel the need to buy to participate.

Just really wanted to thank you for taking the topic seriously and not sloughing it off as I appreciate it’s not what the industry and collectors necessarily want to acknowledge.

I would cautiously suspect it impacts a large percentage of participants.

Thank you JL -anonymous

Jeremy, man I had to reach out and just say hello, and also thank you. Idk how busy your schedule is and if you get a chance to read messages on here, but man I just wanted to say thank you. The past quite a few episodes I’ve listened to of yours on Apple podcast, really just resonated with me. The pick a lane in collecting, and now the whole getting help with ripping and breaking.   To keep it short, your content has really made me realize I am on the correct path right now. I kinda felt alone till hearing the last couple shows man. So thank you. -@charleybuckets1
